This fall (October 14) and next spring (April 8), This fall (October 14) and next spring (April 8), #Texas will be the only state to experience 2 solar eclipses within a 6-month period!

These celestial phenomena will pass right through the heart of @castelltexas and word is that the county of Llano will swell 1 million Astro-gazers. In order to view these, it would be best to venture to the smaller towns in the #texashillcountry which are sure to have longer-lasting and more clear view of the eclipses with close to 5 minutes of maximum total viewing time. 🌔

The last time the #HillCountry was covered in darkness by a total solar eclipse was in 1397, so 626 years ago — when Texas didn’t even exist! On average, the same place on #Earth only sees a total solar eclipse about every 350 years. 💫

A total solar eclipse happens when the #Moon passes between the #Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. The sky will darken as if it were dawn or dusk. Fun Fact: When a solar eclipse reaches totality, nocturnal wildlife sometimes wakes up, thinking that it’s nighttime, and non-nocturnal wildlife might think it’s time to head to sleep! 🦉

Bottom line, you definitely do not want to miss this one as the next total solar eclipse that can be seen from the United States won’t be until Aug 23, 2044!

The Castell General Store was repurposed from an old gas station called the “Sunshine Station” on land owned by Randy Liefeste which was originally purchased in 1853 and has been handed down through five generations.

This #TexasHillCountry hangout is FAMOUS for one of the biggest (and best tasting!) burgers in Texas, cold beer bottles (ask for it “dressed” 💃), TB proprietary wines and the largest congregation of “Drinking With Jesus” in in the whole country. But STAY for the tall Texas tales, and be sure to ask about the legacy of Cockaroo, Duke and the Billy Bass 🐓 🐟 @castellgeneralstore

The 4th and final Supermoon of 2023 will shine tod The 4th and final Supermoon of 2023 will shine today and tomorrow, reaching peak illumination this weekend @castelltexas 🌕

At 224,854 miles away from Earth, the moon is about 14,046 miles closer than it’s average distance, making the appearance of the moon 5% bigger and 13% brighter than average.

Also known as “harvest moon”, the description is a nod to the season of gathering because the event occurs close to the beginning of fall, or the autumnal equinox and time of year when many crops peak in the Northern Hemisphere – often helping farmers work into the evening to harvest their bounty ahead of the first frost – surely as it did for the first settlers in Llano and Mason Counties around us @castelltexas @castellgeneralstore

Other monikers for September’s full moon across different indigenous tribes include the corn maker moon from the Abenaki tribe, the moon of the brown leaves from the Lakota people and autumn moon from the Passamaquoddy tribe.

So if you take some worthy pictures of the moon this weekend, don’t hesitate to post them to @castelltexas !!

Central Texas, it turns out, is a great place to v Central Texas, it turns out, is a great place to view Precambrian history. The oldest rocks in Texas can be found in the Llano Uplift, dating back 1.3 billion years. And given this year’s drought they are more exposed than ever, unfortunately for the water supply. But looking on the bright side they have given us more to appreciate and explore about our beautiful Llano River.

Precambrian rocks, often called the “basement complex,” are thought to form the foundation of continental masses. These rocks, some more than a billion years old, include complexly deformed rocks that were originally formed by cooling from a liquid state, as well as rocks that were altered from pre-existing rocks. And while they may underlie all of Texas, the outcrop in Central Texas is only the exposed part of the Texas Craton. (A craton is a stable, almost immovable portion of the earth’s crust that forms the nuclear mass of a continent.) The Texas Craton, bordered on the east and south by the Ouachita Trough consists of a deep-marine basin extending along the Paleozoic continental margin as far-reaching as Arkansas, Oklahoma & Mexico.

Texas today while still a composite of nature's processes, is but one frame in a dynamic geological kaleidoscope of changing rivers, subsiding basins, shifting beaches, uplifting mountains, and eroding plateaus. And the face of modern Texas, surrounding @castelltexas, is the link that connects its geologic past to its inevitable future.
